The Naked Truth

He could draw on Earth's ability to heal and regenerate plants, to thrive in harsh conditions, and that was one of the reasons he was being hunted. That and the ancient sword or two he had stolen from Anghus. Dick deserved it.

Sage really hadn't been expecting an invitation from the Panthers for their ball. She'd known they were having one, because all three of them had come to her and requested dresses that would turn the fashion world of Zezolla on it's head. Which she'd delivered, if she did say so herself. And as a thank you, they had invited her to the ball. Which had left her feeling a little in awe. For all the gossip, and the scandal that surrounded the three women, they were extremely kind. They had paid her well for her services, and had begun spreading the word that their gowns were gorgeous and were created by her. Which would have been enough as far as payment went, but then they'd taken it a step further and had invited her to the party. Normally, she may not have gone. She may have politely declined. Because that also meant she had to create a gown for herself that would stand out amongst the crowd. And why? Well because of a pretty girl of course, because Sage really was that much of an idiot.

She was an idiot because there was no reason at all for her to believe that the pretty girl even wanted to see her. No reason at all for her to believe that the pretty girl even liked girls. But still Sage slept in that morning until late afternoon, woke up, and started to get ready for the ball. She pulled on the dress she'd finished the night before, and tried to tame the mass of strangely colored hair on the top of her head. Looking at herself in the mirror she focused enough to add some color to her lips, and cheeks, and lengthen her eyelashes just a little. It wasn't much, but it was better than traditional cosmetics. Then she set off, in a carriage she'd rented.

The hall was bustling with people. Everyone was moving this way and that to find their seats, and settle in before they started the dancing. Looking around from behind her mask she selected a table near the exit to the balcony in case she decided she needed a quick escape, and then went to get a drink.

The Panthers were known for their sordid parties and affairs, so why mother thought it was a grand idea to go traipsing into one of their parties was beyond Callista's kenning. Maybe she wanted Cal to be thrust into their circles because the women were known and they were wealthy, but with consorting with them came a certain crowd, too. She saw it in their eyes, the lingering looks of the party goers and it made Cal's skin prickle in awareness.

This was a lot to take in, the tables were dressed oddly in her opinion, dressed to provoke thought and perhaps something else. Yet, it was well done, erotic and elegant all in one. She let out a breath and gathered the skirt of her dress in one hand and began to move toward the punch table. She was too sober to take it all in, just a little something would take the edge off and so she went to the punch table, only to find herself inspecting a dress of another woman. It was absolutely stunning, in truth it reminded her of her other form. The elegant swan, with pristine white feathers, came to her mind and she found herself smiling at the other girl, not knowing who it was. She turned her head and held her hands out to receive the warm drink. One sniff and it smelled like cider, another it smelled like fuel, another it smelled of mulling spices and finally as she took a small sip, it tasted like heaven.

"That's a beautiful dress, compliments to your seamstress," she said honestly and began to back pedal to where she thought was safe, in a corner away from the dance floor. She didn't know anyone here, but this was just the beginning of the festivities and she could only imagine what came next.

Sage took the drink that was offered by one of the well dress staff, and sipped it slowly. Letting the alcohol settle into her veins and relax her at least the slightest. This evening would be a long one, she could feel it. And she worried that if she left too early then they might think her rude. She didn't want to seem rude to the best clients she'd had since coming to the city. So she'd decided to stick it out until at last most of the way through the evening. Then maybe people would begin to melt off into their respective corners and she could sneak away without being noticed. It was possible right? So she took another sip and let the feeling of the burn soother her futher. It would take some time to get into a state that was slightly drunk enough to be relaxed in this situation. For everywhere she looked she felt more and more as if she simply did not fit in. This is not where she belonged... at least not yet. Not until people knew her by name.

She turned to head back to her table and smiled a little as she caught sight of another dress that definitely had been one of her own. Miss Callista Paxton looked positively ravishing in the gown that she had designed for her. It fit her perfectly, and the lines of the dress followed the lines of her body so well that Sage had to bite her lip to remind her eyes not to linger too long on her form. Her lips twitched at the compliment the other woman spouted. "Why thank you, I will pass your compliments along." She said smoothly, but a little chuckle threatened to burble up out of her throat. She was highly amused already by the entire interaction. "Your gown is quite beautiful as well, if I do say so myself," she resisted the urge to wink, but her eyes were bright with mirth.

The thing about Shifters was that they had heightened senses like that of a Werewolf. They could smell better, hear, see and taste than a human. The air was crowded with scents, some vaguely familiar and others not, but one thing was for certain the crowd was quite rowdy. The pheromones that floated around were enough to cause her skin to prickle in awareness. At first, she didn't smell Sage, not when she complimented the other's dress, but as someone walked by and the scent of her tickled her nose she smiled devilishly. There was a reason why she wore a dark neutral dress instead of white.

"I'm sure you will," she replied sharply, her blue eyes narrowed behind her mask and she laughed. Well, if nothing else came of this party then a fun game would. "It is lovely, isn't it? It was the first time I've ever been to a female for a commissioned dress. We usually use a man and he's adverse to touching a female more than he has to. My seamstress had her hands all over me though, I think it served a purpose. She got the fit just right." She took her hand and slid it from the curve of a breast down to her hips.

Callista was not shy with a mask on her face and she wasn't altogether a shy being to begin with, quiet most certainly. She preferred to watch and then act, while her sister would act before fully understanding the situation. As the sound of a trumpet blared Cal turned her head to the side, another performance had begun and she wasn't altogether interested in it. From what she saw it had been mostly sex-related and Cal was no prude, but she wasn't well versed when it came to sex. Or versed at all, she had never been kissed, let alone touched intimately.

Sage was no fool, she could see recognition light in the other woman's eyes the moment it did. There had been some hope in coming here that she would run into Miss Paxton. Perhaps get the chance to speak to her on something more of a personal level. Especially without her annoying family interruption as they were want to do when in the shop. But that had been an idle idea. A day dream. Never had she really thought that it would happen. For she was fairly certain that the attractions he felt towards the other woman were entirely one sided. And even if they were not entirely one sided, Miss Paxton was a woman of propriety. A woman who would no doubt do was society expected her to, and marry a nice gentleman and start a little family in some stuffy manor house somewhere. She would do as was expected of her, and any feelings developed between the pair would only serve to break Sage's heart.

The young seamstress told herself all of these things in an attempt to talk herself out of the growing attraction she felt for the young Miss Paxton. It hadn't worked. Even now as she stood looking at the other woman in the dress she had designed for her, Sage could feel her mouth going dry. She nodded numbly swallowing roughly around a tongue that suddenly seemed to big. Her eyes flicking down to follow the creamy hand down over the black fabric. "Yes, I've heard that that can be the case," she said stupidly. Gods that was moronic. Why couldn't she even talk to Miss Paxton? She was usually so smooth. "So... did you come with anybody?" Please say no. Please say no. Please say no. What was she going to say if Callista did say yes? Would she slink back to her corner and hide away. Probably...

Callista was dutiful and yet she had a rebellious streak to her, too. By way of casually calling her mother out when she was being far too strict, and also chastising Chloe for being ridiculous. As a whole, though, Cal respected her mother and often did as she said. This did not mean she didn't question her mother or her motives.

If Lady Paxton had it her way she would have shipped Callista off to the palace and situated her in front of Prince Wei, which was what she aimed to do. Cal thought it was ridiculous, that out of everyone in the kingdom the Prince was going to pay attention to her? She wasn't a fool and knew there was nothing spectacular about her. There was, of course, the big problem - she didn't find men attractive. Well, she did but in the same way, she complimented a brother figure. A platonic, you look handsome tonight. Don't you look sharp? She felt no stirrings and knew she shouldn't feel this way but it was women that made her heart flutter and her stomach twist.

"No, my sister fell ill and my mother opted to stay home with her instead. I came with a chaperone who... well, she's already occupied." Cal made a point to lean back to find her chaperone who at this moment had her tongue jammed down the throat of a waiter. "Have you been to a Panther party before?" A casual glance around the room made Cal's skin prickle, she shook her head and opted to choose the pink punch instead of the sparkling clear one.

Little did Lady Callista know was that the pink juice was an aphrodisiac to enhance the experience at the party. It was after all called a night of sin for a reason. She scooped her glass up and down a few large sips, smiling.

Sage had come to terms with who she was a long time ago. Her parents hadn't seemed to care much at all that she liked girls and not boys. But they had advised her to keep that information mostly to herself. For there were plenty of people in their world who would not be so indifferent to the fact. So she did, she kept it to herself for the most part. She'd had a girlfriend here or there, but nothing serious. Mostly they were girls just wanting to try something a little "different". Bored socialites who thought kissing a girl would make them edgy. But in the end they always went back to men. Because that was what was expected of them, and that was what was proper. So Sage had also come to terms with the fact that she'd likely die alone. So be it. She didn't mind, so long as she didn't have to pretend to be something she was not. She'd be an old maid if that's what was required of her so long as she didn't have to marry a man.

But there was something different in Callista Paxton. Sage got this feeling that the other woman wasn't just doing this because she wanted to seem adventurous to her suitors. She got the feeling that maybe, just maybe, Callista was just like herself. Which sent a thrill of excitement up her spine. "So she seems to be." Sage offered with a little chuckle taking a sip of her own drink. She'd opted for the clear punch, but she was taking her time with it. Really she'd rather have some water than this, she needed to keep her wits about her. But that didn't seem to be an option here. "Oh no, I'm rather new to Afrelle. And we never had anything like this in the little town where i'm from." she said softly now feeling a little like a fish out of water. Of course she was a fish out of water. She was a small town girl at a big city sex party! Nothing in her life would ever have prepared her for this! "Have you been to many?"

Callista's mother had plans for her, she was to climb the social ladder and higher than what she had been able to accomplish. Lady Paxton lived vicariously through Callista and Chloe, she also believed that when her daughters married well, because why wouldn't they? That they'd share their wealth with dear mother. Happiness always rested on wealth, but Cal knew that wasn't true. She couldn't truly be happy and be married to some disgusting old man, money just couldn't buy happiness and she knew that. Yet, how could she begin to oppose her mother, she was clever in how she did it, but outright to her?

A few minutes after drinking the pink punch Cal's cheeks grew warmer and she felt her heart race a little. Odd, she was used to drinking alcohol, but none made her feel quite so giddy in such a short amount of time. It must have been a strong one. "Really? What did you have in your little town?" Her words were clear, but they took on a lower tone, almost purring them. She was intrigued to know what Sage's prior town had to offer if nothing similar to Afrelle, what was it like? Life in Afrelle wasn't dull, it was forever changing and one never knew if they had fallen from grace in one mishap. However, Cal did want to travel some, even if it wasn't to the other kingdoms, it would have been nice enough to fully travel throughout Zezolla and explore what it had to offer.

"I always find it interesting to learn about people's origins. Mine are dull, I was born and raised here," she cocked her head to the side, pursing her ruby red lips. Her blue eyes which had darkened from the aphrodisiac infused punch flicked to the side. A breath escaped her lips and she longed for the feel of fresh air against her skin.

Sage's parents had never pushed her to be anything but what she wanted to be. They didn't care that she preferred girls to boys. They didn't care that she'd decided her life would be spent making beautiful clothes for people to wear. All they cared was that she was happy. Money had never been something important in her life, maybe because they didn't have any of it. They needed it to eat, yes, and to keep a roof over their heads. But Sage had never needed fancy things, and she knew that if this all went away, and she had to return to her town with her tail tucked between her legs it would be her failure that hurt her, not her lack of funds. But she wasn't going to fail, she'd decided that. She'd work herself to the bone before she allowed that to happen. She would not go home a failure. But she didn't count her success in terms of currency or social status.

She laughed a little at the question, her eyes a light with mischief. It was funny someone from the city was interested in what went on in a small town. "Nothing much, really. We had a bookstore, a seamstress, a small market, and that was kind of it. It was mostly a farming town, and most people didn't have time for anything else. No parties... though right after spring harvest there was always a big festival that was full of drink and dancing. That was fun." she said smiling a little as her mind pulled up images of the last festival she'd been to. It had been nice, and there'd been a pretty girl she'd danced with. Nothing had come of it, same girl had gone off to marry one of the farm boys. But it had been fun while it lasted. "Being born and raised in Zezolla is dull," she asked curiously, moving to Callista's side and looping her arm through her's perhaps a little brazenly. "You're a little flushed, let's get some air," she suggested heading through the crowd towards one of the balconies.

Cal smiled as she pictured the quaint setting, it must have been nice and not as judgmental as the city, she thought. Here, everyone was watching and whispering, they all waited for a misstep so that they could leap on the victim. It was a dog eat dog society, friends one moment and enemies the next. She supposed that was what happened when the kingdom held the title of the richest country. People could afford to look down their noses and scoff. Not that Cal ever did, but she didn't often speak up, either.

"That sounds... fun." She laughed, certainly it hadn't been anything like this. Although, Cal didn't think many places were like this. This was so much on the senses- the sounds, scents, displays, everything about it was setting her up to overload. "I suppose it depends on where you're from. It's all frills, painted faces and farce smiles. It can be tiresome." Why was her tongue moving so loosely? She felt her cheeks flush, gods! She never would have been so bold as to admit how bored she was with society. Frivolous and boring, that was what it was- for the most part. This party was something else, she felt her pulse quicken and her bright blue eyes seemed all the brighter.

"That sounds like a good idea," she murmured as she let the other woman lead her through the crowd and toward a balcony. The cooler air on her skin made her gasp softly, she hadn't realized how warm it truly was in there. Her eyes flicked to the side so she could catch the profile of Sage, her full lips seemed to beckon her and she bit her bottom lip to check herself. The sound of her heart beating pounded in her ears and it was all Cal could do to distract herself.

The thing with living in a small town was that there was no place to hide, as Sage had realized quickly. They were no less judgmental, no more accepting than those in the big city. In fact they may have very well been worse. But couple that with the fact that in her little village everyone knew everything. When she realized she liked girls it was only a couple of hours before the entire village knew, and she was shunned from many places. Or told by many of the elder women that she would just grow out of it. That she was mistaken. That it was just because she still thought boys had cooties or some nonsense. As she got older some of that changed. Some people became more accepting, but only because she became successful as a seamstress. Even still, there were people who wouldn't talk to her, those in her peer group who were told to avoid her by their parents, and old biddies who said she'd grow out of it. Thankfully, her parents knew better, and they'd never much cared who she wanted to be with. She worked hard, and she was going to make her dreams come true, and she was happy, and that was all that mattered to them. So it wasn't any different than the city.

She nodded as she listened to Callista. "The grass is always greener, I suppose," she shrugged a little with a soft smile tugging up the corners of her lips. It was nice to just be able to talk to Callista. While she'd been preparing her dress there had been times like this when they had been able to chat. But there was always the fear that her mother or sister would come back. And Sage could tell the very thought put the other girl on edge. She looped her arm around Callista's and lead her out onto one of the balconies. Most of the party goers were too caught up in the food, or the drink, or the shows, or each other that the balconies were empty. She took a deep breath of the cool night air smiling softly.

"So where is your family? I thought they were preparing for this shindig too."

"Yes, exactly that." Even the countryside manors had always seem to call to her, but Cal lived in the heart of the city. Their home was lavish and yet it wasn't the largest one in the city, her mother had a way of pinching pennies and yet affording the grandest things. The woman knew how to barter.

Gods, she felt so strange, her skin was hypersensitive and aware of Sage's touch and as they walked outside the cool air against her skin was a stark contrast. At least she wouldn't have to worry about her sister or mother tonight, they were home. She blinked at the question, half wondering if she said it out loud. "They're home this evening, both are ill with a stomach bug." Both were handling it quite dramatically, too.

Her sister was convinced she was dying and mother was in no mood to deal with her antics. She had shooed her out the door, her step-sister was tasked with helping Chloe realize she wasn't actually dying. "They were both quite ill, but if you ask me it's food borne and not actually that terrible bug. They ate fish this afternoon and I told them not to, that it was off." She shrugged and shook her head. "Looks like I was right." A throaty laugh escaped her as she looked down at the ground.

Cal released a shaky breath and tried to steady her pulse, she felt so strange and wondered if it was, in fact, the bug, but her stomach felt fine-- aside from the fluttering feeling she felt. "So, how did you come to be invited to this?" Idly, she wondered how she even received an invite to this party. The Panthers were well known but the Paxton family was so minor as far as nobility went that she was quite surprised.

Sage supposed she could lie and say that she felt badly that Callista's mother and sister were both sick and in bed. She supposed that might be the right thing to do, to say that she was sorry. But the fact of the matter was that she was not. She was in fact quite pleased with the fact that they were gone. It meant that she had Callista all to herself for the evening. She didn't have to worry about them barging in and interrupting. She didn't have to worry about them making rude comments, and acting like she didn't exist because she was "the help". Instead they could stand here, and talk, and be friendly. The very idea of it made Sage's stomach do a little flip flop. Provided no one else vied for Callista's attention tonight, she would have it... all evening. Now, she just had to make sure she didn't say anything too stupid.

"Oh, how... unfortunate... for them." She said carefully trying to erase any trace of glee from her tone. It was hard, very hard. But Sage found she didn't much care for the other Paxton women. They were in a word, cruel. They made a point to be nasty, and snide to anyone and everyone they met with. Including Callista. And from what Sage had seen of how they treated her, she didn't much care for it. To the mother, Callista was merely a pawn, and to the sister she was competition. Neither, it seemed to her, truly saw the young blonde woman as a person. Which could only make Sage frown. For even in her village where her own preferences were shunned, her family had never seen her as any less of a person. They had always loved her, and supported her, no matter what. Shaking herself internally she went back to the conversation.

A proud little grin tugged her lips at the question. "I made the Panthers' dresses for the evening. They were so impressed they gave me an invite." She flushed a little at the compliment that it had been, but refused to wipe the proud smile from her face.
